Aloha, and welcome to the Sheascapes blog.
I'm Shea, a landscape painter born and raised here on Kauaʻi. I've been making art for more than twelve years, and in all that time my favorite subject has never changed. It's this island: the ridgelines, the ocean, the forests, and the light that never looks the same twice.
I started this blog so you can see what happens before a painting reaches the shop. The places, the stories, and the messy middle.
Growing up with the best teacher
When you grow up on Kauaʻi, you learn to watch the light. Clouds roll over the mountains and the whole valley changes color in minutes. A beach you've visited a hundred times looks brand new at sunset.
[Add a favorite childhood memory here, e.g. the first place you remember wanting to paint, or a beach day with your family.]
I didn't know it then, but all of that watching was training. Today, when I mix a sky color or block in a mountain, I'm reaching back to those years of paying attention.
Every painting is a time capsule
For me, painting isn't only about getting a landscape right. It's about holding on to a feeling.
Each piece holds a chapter of my life. When I look at Where It Began, I don't just see the scene. I remember who I was with, what was on my mind, and what that season of life felt like. [Add one sentence on what that painting means to you.]
Some of those chapters were joyful. Some were hard. Art is how I work through both, and I think that's why people connect with the pieces. You might not know my story behind a painting, but you bring your own.
Seeing it all again through my son
Becoming a mom changed how I see home. Now I get to share these places with my son, and watching him discover them reminds me how magical they are. It has made me more grateful for this island, and that gratitude goes into every canvas.
Teaching the next generation
Alongside painting, I've created murals, taken on commissions, and taught private and group lessons. Recently I started teaching art to Pre-K through 5th grade students, which might be the most fun I've ever had with a paintbrush. Kids paint fearlessly, and they remind me to do the same.
What you'll find in the shop
